Ace commentator Harsha Bhogle, on Tuesday (June 20), said Indian team has let itself lose an outstanding resource with Anil Kumble stepping down as head coach.
Kumble on Tuesday stepped down from his position after a widely-speculated rift with captain Virat Kohli, marking a disappointing end to a very successful spell. The team did extremely well under the guidance of the legendary India spinner, rising to number one in Test ranking with some outstanding performances over the past one year.
Kumble, who was appointed coach in June last year, began his term with a 2-0 Test series win in India before winning at home against New Zealand (3-0), England (4-0), Bangladesh (1- 0) and Australia (2-1). Under his guidance, the Men in Blue also registered ODI series win over New Zealand and England and a T20I series win over the latter in addition to finishing runners-up in the just-concluded ICC Champions Trophy.
His contract had expired after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy but he was given the option to extend it for one more series and accompany the team to the Caribbeans for the upcoming limited-overs series. However, upon being conveyed that Kohli does not like his style, the former India skipper immediately stepped down from the post.
The former India spinner’s sudden and shocking decision to quit has left everyone stunned and Harsha Bhogle is also one of them. The commentator took to Twitter to say that Kumble stepping down as the coach is a big loss for the team.
“If it is true that @anilkumble1074 has stepped down as coach, Indian cricket has let itself lose an outstanding resource,” tweeted Bhogle.
