According to a report from newzimbabwe.com, an Indian cricketer was arrested by local police over allegations of rape in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The Indian team is currently touring Zimbabwe to play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is in a low-profile series. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Charity Charamba confirmed the incident.
“There are allegations of rape against an Indian national by a Zimbabwe woman,” she said.
“As Police are bound by the law when such serious matters arise and we investigate. We have investigated and forwarded the case to the courts for determination and we wait for the outcome. He appeared in the court today.”
The Meikel’s hotel in Harare where the players are residing is thoroughly scrutinized by the police and officials from country’s intelligence amid speculations of an Indian cricketer involved in the incident. However, the identity of the player is undisclosed as of now.
“It is a tricky situation because it could turn into a diplomatic feud between the two countries. People need to tread carefully because the Indian ambassador was seen at the hotel trying to stop the player’s arrest or maybe broker an out-of-court settlement with the woman,” said a close source to the developments.
It was also reported that the woman was drugged before getting abused by the player.
“It is funny story really because it claimed the woman was loitering the passages at the hotel and was invited for drinks.
“She claims to have awoken later with bloodied underwear which implies she did not know how she ended up in player’s room,” said the source.
Meanwhile, India, who have been touring Zimbabwe, has faced a set back as Zimbabwe came out on top in a nerve-racking first T20I as they eventually prevailed by 2 runs.
It remains to be seen who the player would be in the upcoming days as the player’s name is not disclosed by anyone so far and also a legal action by BCCI awaits if the player is found guilty of the crime.
