Do you know England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan is Irish born? Though he is not England born cricketer, he is a famous player for them. He became the first captain of England to lead them to the World Cup trophy. Eoin is not only the player who has not represented his birth-nation. There are many cricketers like Kevin Pietersen, Imran Tahir, etc. are some of the well-known examples of these.

There might be different reasons why the player has chosen to represent another country rather than playing for their birth nation. And India has also allowed cricketer from different countries.

Here, in this article, we figured out a few Indian cricketers, who were born outside India.

6. Ashok Gandotra – Brazil:

Ashok Gandotra was born in Rio de Janeiro in November 1948. He was called in the Indian national cricket team in 1969 when Vijay Merchant was chairman of the selection committee. The left-hand batsman Gandotra was given a place in the Indian team after his seeing prolific performance at the university level.

He appeared in Two Test matches, which came against New Zealand and Australia. He scored just 54 runs in those two matches. His unimpressive performance costed him, and he was dropped from the team though he continued his domestic cricket.

He went on play 56 first-class matches and also shifted his base from Bengal to Delhi but was could not earn the call from the national team. He has collected 2121 runs, including two centuries in first-class cricket.

5. Lall Singh – Malaysia:

Lall Singh, who was born in Malaysia in 1909, was the Test cricketer who represented India in only one Test match. He was for his catching skills rather than scoring runs or taking wickets.

He played the inaugural Test match against England in 1932 but didn’t have an impressive outing. He batted at number 9 and scored 15 runs in the first innings and the second innings he scored 29. Also, he didn’t pick a wicket.

Singh has also played 32 first-class matches and scored 1123 runs, including one century.  He is also the first Test cricketer of an Asian team who was born in a non-Test playing country.

4. Khokhan Sen – Bangladesh:

Khokhan Sen, famously known as Probir sen, was born in Comilla, Bangladesh(Which was part of India before partition). With much success at the school level, he started playing for Bengal at the age of 17.

The right-hand batsman made the Test debut in 1948 and went on to play 14 Test matches. Also, he was the first wicketkeeper to become a regular feature in the Indian side. Interestingly, he was the only Indian wicket-keeper to stump Don Bradman.

Probir played as many as 82 first-class matches. He amassed 2580 runs during his 15-year first-class career at an average of 23.24 with the help of three centuries. Probir affected 108 dismissals in 70 first-class games as a wicketkeeper – 97 catches and 35 stumpings.

3. Salim Durani – Afghanistan

Salim Durani, who made the debut in the Indian team in 1960, was born in Kabul Afghanistan. He was an all-rounder who was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and a left-handed batsman. He was famous for hitting big sixes.

The Arjuna awardee made his Test debut at the start of 1960 against Australia at the Brabourne Stadium. He featured in a total of 29 Test matches for India where he scored 1202 runs with the help of eight 50+ scores including a hundred. The spinner has also bagged 75 wickets with his left-arm spin at an average of 35.42.

He last played for India against Australia in 1973 in Mumbai. Salim was the crucial player for India in the victories against England and West Indies at home.

2. Ten Players – Pakistan

Naoomal Jaoomal, Jenni Irani, Gogumal Kishenchand, Gulabrai Ramchand, and Pananmal Punjabi were born in Karachi. At the same time, Dilawar Hussain, Gul Mohammad, Abdul Kardar, Man Sood and Amir Elahi are the others, who were born in Lahore. Surprisingly, all these ten players were born in cities which became a part of Pakistan after Independence.

Among them, Gulabrai Ramchand was the most successful Indian cricketer who featured in 33 Test matches, scoring 1180 runs and claimed 41 wickets.

1. Robin Singh – Trinidad and Tobago

Robin Sharma is counted in the list of the one of the best allrounder of the Indian cricket team. Very few people know that he is not an India born cricketer and is the most-capped player of India, who was born outside India.

Robin was born in Princes Town, which is a city in Trinidad and Tobago. The Indian cricketer has featured in 136 ODI matches but has played only one Test match in 1999 which was his last.

In his 136 ODI matches, Robin Singh scored 2336 runs with one hundred and nine half-centuries. He also bagged 69 wickets in his ODI career with 5/22 being his best.
