India’s Big Match Player Gautam Gambhir Gets Padma Shri Award

India’s former southpaw batsman Gautam Gambhir who recently retired from the game has been bestowed with Padma Shri on Friday (25 January). Gambhir was instrumental in the success of the team during his playing days and had an illustrious career for the India National Cricket Team.
He was regarded as a big match player as he scored a brilliant 75 in the inaugural edition of the World T20 final in 2007 against arch-rivals Pakistan. The talisman left-hander also scored a crucial knock of 97 in the final of the World Cup 2011 which helped India in lifting the coveted World Cup trophy for the second time.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir also ended his career on a high. He scored a fine hundred in his swansong while playing for Delhi against Andhra in the Ranji Trophy. The southpaw batsman scored a fine knock of 112 runs.
On the other hand, Bachendri Pal is also rewarded with the third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan. Pal became the first Indian woman to scale Mount Everest in 1984. She was rewarded with Padma Shri in the same year.

India’s football team captain Sunil Chhetri is among the other recipients of the Padma Shri. Chettri has been instrumental in taking Indian football to new heights. In fact, the talisman striker is the third highest active goalscorer behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Table tennis player A Sharath Kamal, chess star Harika Dronavalli, archer Bombayla Devi Laishram, wrestler Bajrang Punia, basketball player Prashanti Singh and kabaddi star Ajay Thakur are among the other recipients of the Padma Shri.
Bajrang Punia won a gold medal in Asian Games of 2018. Meanwhile, Sharath Kamal reached an all-time best ranking of 30. He also won his ninth National singles title recently.
