Three years after India registered its first overseas Test series win in New Zealand under Tiger Pataudi, Ajit Wadekar-led India’s to its one of the greatest overseas wins till date. Prior to that series, India had a dismal record against the mighty West Indies. In 23 Tests, at home and away, India had not managed a single win.

However, the trend changed when India led by Sunil Gavaskar’s stunning exploits stunned the Gary Sobers-led side. The first Test in which Gavaskar did not play ended in a draw before India finally got the monkey off its back by winning the second Test at Port-of-Spain.

Dilip Sardesai had starred in that match, scoring 112 while Gavaskar began his Test career with scores of 65 and 67 not out. The remaining three Tests ended in draws, as India clinched the five-match series 1-0.

Gavaskar finished the series with a staggering 774 runs in just four Tests at a mind-boggling average of 154.80.
