India’s predicted squad for last two ODIs against New Zealand

After thoroughly dominating the three-match Test series against New Zealand, the Indian team started the five-match series with a bang. The hosts were clinical in every department and registered a comprehensive 6-wicket win over the Kiwis at Dharamsala. However, a collective batting failure in the second match at Kotla saw them losing the match by 6 runs. The defeat exposed the Indian team’s weakness and showed that there are still a lot of work to do if the team wants to defend the Champions Trophy title next year in England.

The third match will be played at Mohali and after that, the team for the final two ODIs will be announced. While several players in the team have cemented their spot, there are few slots which can go to other players. And with India scheduled to play only a few series before the Champions Trophy, the selectors would be looking to make a balanced team as quickly as possible. Here is the predicted squad for the next two matches:

The team management would definitely not want to make too many changes to the squad but they can bring in some new faces for the next two ODIs. Here is the predicted squad for the next two matches:

1. Rohit Sharma:

One of India’s most consistent performers for India in the limited-overs cricket, Rohit Sharma has found it tough to get going in the first couple of matches. So far, he has scored only 29 runs in the first two matches but is expected to retain his place in the squad for the final two ODIs.

2. KL Rahul

After making the most of the limited chances, the youngster finally looked to become a regular in the team when he was given the chance to open in the first Test ahead of Shikhar Dhawan. However, an injury ruled him out of the series. But if he gets fit in time, he is expected to make it to the squad.

3. Shikhar Dhawan:

The opener has struggled to get runs under his belt in last few months but his proven track record in big tournaments might work in his favour. He played in the second Test but was ruled out of the series after suffering an injury. Moreover, he has gelled well with Rohit Sharma at the top and the selectors are expected to include him in the squad if he gets fit.

4. Virat Kohli:

The most consistent performer for India in the last couple of year, Kohli will probably be the first name on the team sheet.

5. Karun Nair

Karun Nair, India

One of the most consistent performers in the domestic circuit, Karun Nair has proved that he has the ability to perform at the highest level with his performance in the IPL. The selectors might try him by including him in the squad for the remainder  of the series.

6. Yuvraj Singh:

The southpaw last played an ODI way back in 2013. He got ample chances to prove himself in the T20 format but so far he has failed to show his old form. However, he is now in the reckoning for a spot in the team after scoring 177 in the first innings and a critical 76 in the second innings for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy. A proven performer in this format, the new selectors might give him a life line.

7. Ajinkya Rahane:

The Mumbai batsman opened the innings in the first two matches but might be demoted to the middle order in the last two matches if the regular openers return in the team. With India’s middle-order looking like a weak link, Rahane’s presence can give the much-needed solidarity.

8. MS Dhoni:

The Indian skipper is under immense pressure to perform. His batting failure in the last match against New Zealand has made the matters worse for him. But time is running out for the Indian captain and he will be desperate to get some runs under his belt.

9. Manish Pandey:

The youngster has failed to score big in the first two ODIs but deserves an extended run with the team after a brilliant show for India A in Australia. Moreover, his century for the senior Indian team against Australia earlier this year is a proof that he has the ability to thrive at the highest stage of the game.

10. Kedar Jadhav:

Jadhav’s bowling has been a revelation in the series.A handy bowler who has the ability to break the partnerships, Jadhav has impressed one and all with his all-round performance. Also played a handy knock in the second ODI and the deserves an extended run in the team.

11. Yuzvendra Chahal:

With Axar Patel struggling to pick up wickets, the selectors might try Chahal. The leg-spinner has impressed one and all with his bowling in the IPL and enhanced his reputations with a fine show on the Zimbabwe tour. He further made his case strong after finishing the Australia tour with India A as its fourth highest wicket-taker.

12. Amit Mishra:

In the absence of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, the selectors will surely persist with Mishra in the team. The senior-most spinner in the team, Mishra has performed well in the series so far and is expected to make it to the squad for the next two matches.

13. Hardik Pandya:

After bagging the Man of the Match award in his debut match, the all-rounder was all set to star once again for India after taking the team agonisingly close to win in the second ODi. With the team in desperate need of a good all-rounder, Pandya is a guaranteed name for the next two matches.

14. Umesh Yadav:

In absence of Mohammad Shami, Yadav has been really good with the new ball and is expected to be in the squad for the next two ODIs.

15. Jasprit Bumrah:

What a bowler he is turning out to be for the Indian team. His ability to bowl yorkers at will ahs helped the Indian team to restrict the oppositions in the slog overs and is surely a guaranteed name in the squad for the next two matches.
