Injury Rules Alex Hales Out Of T20 Series; Jonny Bairstow Named Replacement
England opener Alex Hales has been ruled out of the third One-Dayer and also from the T20 series against India, after he fractured his right hand during the Cuttack ODI. Wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow has been named as the replacement.
England on Saturday dealt with a huge blow, as Hales had to be sent home for treatment. Earlier, it was reported that he might have a broken finger and he even went for an X-Ray. Later, reports discovered it was his fractured hand which will rule him out of cricket for some time now.
During the second ODI in Cuttack, Hales attempted to catch a ball heading to the boundary of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s bat, which eventually didn’t go, however resulted in getting the 28-year-old injured. Hales, after returning the ball back to keeper, showed discomfort but continued fielding. While batting, Hales could only manage 13 runs, before he nicked one to Dhoni off Jasprit Bumrah’s good length delivery.
His replacement Jonny Bairstow has been a part of ODI squad but is yet to make a cut into the side. The right-handed batsman was one of England’s best batsman during the Test series, having scored 352 runs in five matches at an average of 44.
The third ODI between India and England will take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on January 22 (Sunday).
