New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has been ruled out of the one-off T20I and the first two One-Day Internationals against South Africa after suffering a hamstring injury.
The 30-year-old, who had already missed the second and third Chappell-Hadlee ODIs against Australia with a hamstring injury, recovered in time to be named in the limited-overs squads for the South Africa series. However, he picked up the injury while training and New Zealand Cricket has confirmed it is different to the previous one.
Guptill has been replaced by the uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman Glenn Phillips for the one-off T20I while Dean Brownlie will take his place in the ODI squad.
Speaking about Glenn Phillips, who was the leading run-scorer in the Super Smash tournament, New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen said:
“Glenn was outstanding for Auckland at the top of the order in the Super Smash and proved an extremely exciting player.”
The 20-year-old had scored 369 runs at an average of 46 with the help of a century and three half-centuries.
“He bats with power; has shown he can clear the rope, and gets a deserved opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage,” Larsen added.
“Glenn will play as a specialist batsman only, with Luke still taking the gloves. Playing in his home city, it will certainly be a big occasion for Glenn.”
Larsen also backed Brownlie to do well in the upcoming ODIs. The 32-year-old had scored a match-winning half-century in the final ODI against Australia to help his team reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.
“Dean was the logical player to come into the squad following his recent performance against Australia,” Larsen said.
“We’ve seen the quality he brings and we’re confident of the job he can do for us.”
The one-off T20I will be played on February 17 before the five-match ODI series begins on February 19.
