Former Pakistan skipper and current chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq has invited the officials of Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) to visit the country in order to check the security conditions themselves.
Last week, the FICA advised players not to tour Pakistan due to security concerns in the country. It said in a statement that players should not play in the final of the Pakistan Super League being planned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in March, inviting severe criticism from the PCB.
And now Inzamam-ul-Haq has urged them to visit the country themselves to assess the security situation.
“I think when they came here themselves and see that the security situation has improved a lot in Pakistan they will see it has become safe to play international cricket once again,” he told the media in Islamabad.
Apart from looking to host the PSL final in Lahore, the PCB has also invited the West Indies to play two T20Is in Lahore on March 18 and 19.
“FICA needs to understand that if the Pakistan cricket board is planning to hold the PSL final in Lahore or invite the West Indies to play some matches it is only after getting clearance from the government,” he said.
“It is only after consulting and coordinating with the government and other security agencies that the PCB has decided to now try to organize international matches once again in the country,” he added.
No top Test team has visited Pakistan since March 2009 when terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. Zimbabwe played a short limited-overs series in Lahore in May 2015 but big teams are still reluctant to visit the country which has resulted in huge revenue losses for the PCB.
“International cricket will only resume in Pakistan with support from other cricket playing nations, foreign players and players associations and that is why it is necessary for everyone to understand that the security situation has improved a lot in the country,” he concluded.
