Kings XI Punjab, the franchise of widely acclaimed professional domestic competition Indian Premier League (IPL) could play their matches in Lucknow in the eleventh edition which is scheduled next year (2018).
However, if the move would not succeed or accepted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), KXI might still feature in a couple of fixtures at Lucknow’s Ekana International Cricket (EIC) Stadium.
“The KXIP people had visited the Ekana Stadium and seemingly liked it. However, it depends on BCCI whether they allow the move or not,” an unnamed source was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
Of late, barring few occasions, KXIP side has had a bleak run during the 10-year-old competition, as they are yet to clinch the IPL title.
The other solid reason could be the lack of strong support in their own Den while the side has further failed to impress the spectators after going past group stage twice since 2008.
Earlier in August, this year, the Mohali-based outfit’s management was recently in talks with the national Board BCCI for requesting a shift in their home base.
With a decision yet to come to the fore, the reports suggested the members of the KXIP have had a liking for the venue after witnessing the sophisticated facilities being made available in the stadium.
Pertinently, other than KXI Punjab, the different franchises have had featured across multiple cities at least twice in scheduled matches, in the recent past.
According to the CricketNext reports, the BCCI official on anonymity has had already revealed that it’s a long procedure – to meet the demands of the Punjab side while adding it has further to be approved by the Governing Council of the IPL.
“Firstly, the request needs to be submitted to the GC who will then look into it and take into consideration the various factors stated by the franchise for the shift of base,” an official for BCCI was quoted by CricketNext in August.
BCCI representative in known of the things reiterated the working committee for BCCI would take a final call in this regard.
“But let me tell you, it is a complex procedure and one that shall require time,” he added.
Interestingly, as the Ranji Trophy competition of first-class cricket is going on in India, Lucknow is concurrently hosting the first group stage match between hosts Uttar Pradesh and Railways after the three-month-long premium tournament kicked off on October 06.
