IPL 2016: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Lions – Record Broken! Highest partnership for 5th Wicket in IPL
This match is a fight to reach the top of the table. Both Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Lions are on 12 points and are placed in 2nd and 3rd respectively. KKR have performed consistently throughout this tournament and as a result are the contenders to qualify first for the playoffs among all teams. GL started off well in this tournament but have lost all their previous three matches.
Suresh Raina won the toss and chose to bowl as every captain has been doing so in this season of IPL. Praveen Kumar got the early breakthrough and brought the in-form top order of KKR to its knees. Once again it was Yusuf Pathan who came to the teams rescue, this time though with Shakib al Hasan, who started off slowly. Both of them hit their half-centuries and took the team score to 158 in 20 overs.
McCullum and Smith started aggressively but lost their wickets after getting a good start. Dinesh Karthik too was in an aggressive mood while Raina rotated the strike. Once Finch came, he attached Shakib early on and made the task much easier.
Here’s a list of interesting numbers and stats from this match –
Top Order Failure – This was the first time that KKR lost more than 2 wickets in powerplays this IPL season. In all, they lost 4 wickets in the powerplays in this match.
Highest 5th Wicket Partnership in IPL – The previous best partnership for the 5th wicket in IPL history was 130*by Owais Shah and Angelo Mathews ; David Miller and R Sathish. Yusuf Pathan and Shakib al Hasan scored 134* for the 5th wicket today.
Pathan Power – Pathan scores his 2nd 50 of the season. In the previous 5 seasons from (2011-2015), he scored just one 50 in every season of IPL.
Most Half Centuries – Dinesh Karthik scored his 3rd half century in IPL 2016, it is the most for any player batting on 4th position or lower.
