Sixth-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore welcomed second placed Gujarat Lions at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in a very important match for both the teams. RCB wanted to win this match badly to keep their playoff hopes alive while GL wanted to consolidate their position in the table.
Winning the toss, GL stand-in skipper Brendon McCullum decided to field first. Little did he know that his decision was going to be a nightmare.
AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli hit their second and third century of the season respectively to propel RCB to a mammoth total of 248. Chasing such a huge target without their star batsman Suresh Raina was always going to be a tough task for GL batsmen and they failed miserably in their chase as the whole team was folded for a paltry 104, handing RCB a huge win of 144 runs.
1. Chris Gayle: 0.5/5
Once again failed with the bat and more importantly played 13 balls to score only 6 runs in the powerplay.
2. Virat Kohli: 5/5
A gem of an innings from the RCB captain. Shared a huge partnership of 229 with another centurion de Villiers to completely tilt the match in his team’s favour.
3. AB de Villiers:5/5
Played one of the best knocks of IPL. de Villiers was in a punishing mood right from the time he came to the crease.
4. Shane Watson:1/5
Did not do much in batting as he came to bat with only one ball left. In bowling too, he bowled only one over.
5.KL Rahul: 1/5
Did not bat.
6. Sachin Baby: 2.5/5
Did not get a chance to bat but took two wickets in just 4 balls.
Did not bat and bowled two economical overs, conceding just 13 runs.
Dismissed the dangerous Dwayne Smith early on to set the platform for his team. Was economical too, conceding only 15 runs in his three overs.
9. Chris Jordan: 4/5
The Englishman finally showed his ability with the ball.Conceding only 11 runs from his three overs,he took 4 wickets to end any remaining hope of GL.
10. Varun Aaron: 1.5/5
The only RCB bowler who was a bit expensive today, he conceded 19 runs from his two overs.
11.Yuzvendra Chahal: 3.5/5
Took the most important wicket of GL as he dismissed the dangerous Brendon McCullum in the fifth over to completely tilt the match in his team’s favour. Ended the match with three wickets.
