IPL 2017: After Captain, Rising Pune Supergiants Change Team Name 1

Buying one of the most in-demand players in the auction and changing the captain are not the only steps that Rising Pune Supergiants, sorry, Rising Pune Supergiant have a step ahead for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League as they have removed the ‘S’ from Supergiants.

The Pune-based franchise, which did not enjoy a good inaugural season, have made their intentions clear that they mean business when the tenth edition of the IPL gets underway. During the players’ auction in February, they bought England all-rounder for a record-breaking Rs. 14.50 crore before replacing MS Dhoni with Steve Smith as the captain of the team. And now they have tinkered with the name. However, the franchise has confirmed that the slight change in name has nothing to do with any superstitious belief.

“There is no superstition behind calling ourselves Supergiant now,” the team’s spokesperson told Hindustan Times.

“Last year when he called us Supergiants, we were looking at four to five players in the squad who had supergiant abilities. While we were preparing for this IPL, we thought why just a few players, the entire team is supergiant. So, that is why we decided to go with Supergiant this time,” the spokesperson added.

RPS will begin their campaign against Mumbai Indians on April 6 in Pune.
