IPL 2017 Auction: Two Players RPS Should Target To Bolster Their Squad

After a dismal inaugural season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rising Pune Supergiants will be desperate to do some smart business when the auction takes place on 20th of this month for the upcoming season.

The new-comers had begun the season with an emphatic victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians but managed only four more wins thereafter as they finished second last. Well, the squad was not too bad considering the fact that it had three captains of their respective national sides in the team, including India’s most successful captain and two-time IPL winner Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Steven Smith and Faf du Plessis were the other two. They were further boosted by the inclusion of Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kevin Pietersen, Ishant Sharma and Mitchell Marsh. Pune’s batting lineup was as strong as any other team’s in the competition. However, the team management failed to cover all the bases and it cost them dearly at the end.

Now with only a few days left before they fight it out with other seven franchises to pick the best players in the auction, we have a look at the two players who can prove to be the final two of pieces of the jigsaw:

Jason Roy:

One of the problems for RPS last season was not getting a good start from the openers. They used different opening partners for Ajinkya Rahane but to no avail. The Indian batsman opened alongside Faf du Plessis, Saurabh Tiwary and Usman Khawaja but never managed to forge a successful partnership.

The Pune-based team signed Delhi Daredevils opener Mayank Agarwal in IPL 2017 trading window, but they seriously need to buy a proven player to solve the issue. They need a player who can play a perfect foil to the ever-reliable Rahane, a player who will take the attack to the opposition during the first six overs, something that Rahane has not managed to do. And England opener Jason Roy has the credentials to solve their problem. One of the most dangerous opening batsmen in the world right now, Roy has already proved he has the game plan to succeed in sub-continental conditions. After an impressing outing in the World T20 in India last year, the 26-year-old enhanced his reputation with three consecutive fifties in the recently concluded ODI series against India.

A player who does not shy away from playing his shots, Roy perfectly fits the bill and can prove to be an ideal addition for RPS.

Sean Abbott:

Another department that was a big reason behind the team’s poor performance last season was a weak bowling department. With the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Murugan Ashwin and Adam Zampa in their ranks, RPS was heavily loaded with world-class spinners but they lacked a quality fast-bowler who could have given them early breakthroughs apart from stopping the opposition batsmen from scoring heavily in the slog overs. RPS have retained Ashok Dinda and Ishwar Pandey for the upcoming season but they surely need a proven player who can put an end to their bowling woes. And one name they can consider is Australia’s fast-bowler Sean Abbott.

The 24-year-old was in brilliant form in this year’s Big Bash League, finishing the tournament as its highest wicket-taker with 20 scalps from 10 outings including a five-wicket haul. He has the ability to bowl well with the new ball as well as the old one and RPS can seriously consider him if they want to buy a fast-bowler.
