Once again the Rising Pune Supergiant turned the last over thriller in their own favour, the second time against this franchise in the season.
The visiting bowlers bowled well in the death overs and ensured a win just ahead of the last delivery of the game was to be bowled. It was a superb effort from both Jaydev Unadkat and Ben Stokes, which saw their team defending not a big total.
When asked to bat earlier, Rising Pune Supergiant had a decent start, as the openers though did not go after bowlers in the beginning but also did not gift their wickets too. They started an aggressive show from the sixth over but the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane acted as a barrier, as he was caught by Karn Sharma of his own bowling.
The wicket of the man in form Rahul Tripathi meant that Steven Smith and MS Dhoni had to continue the start but they failed, as the duo could not imitate their junior Rahul Tripathi.
Both of them were dismissed early and there was a fear that team might not even touch the 150 run mark but an innings of 22 off 13 from Manoj Tiwary helped Pune to set a target of 161 for their opponents.
The total proved to be a match-winning total for the team.
Here is what winning captain Steven Smith said after the game –
Smith:
“Absolutely happy. We scrapped really well at the end. Few guys under pressure did really well, Stokesy in the second last over was magnificent. Jaydev was amazing too with his final two overs to keep them down. We love the close ones, never win by a big margin and would like to change that. The dew wasn’t really bad, we expected it to be a lot worse. The wicket did stay good for the whole of 40 overs. It wasn’t a typical Wankhede wicket, took a bit of turn, stopped a bit and 160 was pretty much par. We know the arsenal Mumbai have with their batting. Jaydev was fantastic at the end, he bowled wide with slower balls and hit hard lengths. If a batsman still hits you for a six you just take your hat off. He did really well to stick to his plans after Rohit hit him and came back well.”
