Gujarat Lions’ dismal show this season which reads as only 3 wins 7 matches now means that they are out of the tournament. This is quite strange as the same unit made it to the playoffs with elan in their debut season last year.
However, a string pf poor performances and injury troubles to key players meant that they ended up underperforming very badly. Their only good performance in recent times came against the already struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore who they beat by 7 wickets a week ago.
Both teams are meeting pretty late in the tournament and are meeting for the first time. As far as the previous meetings are concerned the two side have met twice in the previous season and have a 1-1 head to head record.
Lions’ previous encounter with Daredevils was on their home turf in Rajkot. It was a dismal show as the visitors registered a simple 8 wicket win. The loss could be credited to the batting failure which saw them post only 149/7 after being put to bat by the opposition.
The pitch wasn’t tricky, at least it didn’t look like when Dinesh Kartik and Ravindra Jadeja were rescuing Lions or at the time DD was chasing the target. The star trio of McCullum, Smith and Finch failed to leave Lions at 24/3.
Raina also achieved a start before losing his wicket at a crucial junction. However, Kartik and Jadeja got into repair work and stabilised the innings, ensuring the team reached a defendable total.
However, the young duo of Quinton de Kock and Rishabh Pant wasted no time and threw Lions out of the contest quickly as they added 115 for the first wicket. Their assault laid the platform for the chase to be done with ease without any drama.

All of Suresh Raina’ experiments have earned him little success so far. It has been the bowling department that has caused him problems and he has never looked to have found a solution. The injury to their top performer Andrew Tye only worsened the problem.
Basil Thampi seems like the only bowler who appears to have gained something from this edition and helped his team. Jadeja and Praveen Kumar could not live up to his standards, Shivil Kaushik was a huge disappointment.
Irfan Pathan could not match the hype while others like left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan, leg-spinner Ankit Soni and left arm orthodox Shadab Jakati have got only limited opportunities to show their worth.
Nathu Singh may get a look in place of Pradeep Sangwan of Raina opt for a more quick bowler to compliment Thampi and James Faulkner.
Here is the XI: Ishan Kishan, Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina, Aaron Finch, Dwayne Smith, Dinesh Kartik, Ravindra Jadeja, James Faulkner, Pradeep Sangwan, Basil Thampi, Ankit Soni.
