IPL 2017: Four Players Who Can Lead RCB In Virat Kohli And AB de Villiers’ Absence

The tenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has not even started and the competition is already in danger of losing its shine due to a spate of injuries and pullouts.

Some of the biggest attractions of the lucrative league like Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Mitchell Starc, KL Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin, Murali Vijay have already been ruled out of the tournament.

One team which is suffering the most due to the injuries is Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Their talismanic skipper Virat Kohli is already nursing a shoulder injury and will remain on the sidelines for at least a couple of weeks.

KL Rahul, who had played a big role in helping the team make it to the final last year, has also been ruled out of the season due to a shoulder injury.

And just when they were coming to terms with these two huge blows, they received another setback, as AB de Villiers is also doubtful for the season owing to a back injury. De Villiers, who was gearing up to feature in the final for his domestic side Titans in the Momentum Cup, he was ruled out due to the injury.

Whether this injury will hamper his participation in the IPL is still not known but it is quite likely that he will be missing the early stages of the tournament.

The Protea star was supposed to lead the Bangalore-based outfit in the absence of Kohli, but the team management will now have to look for other options.

So here are five names who can lead Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Kohli and De Villiers’ absence:

Chris Gayle:

One of the most experienced T20 player across the world and the highest run-getter in the shortest format of the game, the big Jamaican has got the charisma to lead a side.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore opener is only 63 runs short of becoming the first-ever batsman to score 10,000 runs in T20 cricket.

The big-hitting southpaw, who led West Indies between 2007 and 2010, has almost all the records a batsman would like to hold in T20 — most centuries (18) half-centuries (60), sixes (732) and fours (759), from 286 matches. So there is absolutely no doubt that he has the credentials to lead the last year’s runners-up.

Moreover, his captaincy record in recent times can also compel the team management to consider him seriously. He led Jamaica Tallawahs to two Caribbean Premier League (CPL) titles and, so he remains a strong contender to don the captain’s armband.

Shane Watson:

Another top performer of the Indian Premier League, the former Australia all-rounder has the experience of leading a side in the tournament.

Watson led Rajasthan Royals in 2014 and fell agonisingly short of leading them to the playoffs. His team missed out on the playoffs only on run-rate, and considering this Watson could be another top contender to lead RCB.

Kedar Jadhav:

The rising star of Indian cricket is an unlikely name for the top post but his jaw-dropping performances in recent times can make him a serious contender to bag the captaincy role.

A big name in the domestic circuit, the 32-year old shot into stardom with a Man of the Series performance against England in the ODI series.

Moreover, he is the captain of Maharashtra and so he has the experience of leading a side.

Stuart Binny:

The last few years of IPL have seen a different side of Stuart Binny’s cricket. The Karnataka all-rounder has become an asset in the shortest format of the game due to his all round abilities.

With over 100 T20 appearances to his name, Binny is one of the senior-most players in the RCB squad and could well lead the team in the absence of Kohli and De Villiers.
