IPL 2017: We Gave Away Too Many Runs In The Powerplay, Says Umesh Yadav

After running away with the matches with utmost ease in their previous encounters, Kolkata Knight Riders were on the receiving end at the  Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on Sunday night (April 30.) as Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated the high-flying table-toppers by 48 runs.

Riding on their skipper David Warner’s blistering knock of 126 off just 59 balls, the defending champions posted a massive 209 for 3 in their 20 overs. In reply, the visitors, barring the period when Robin Uthappa was at the crease, never looked in contention and were eventually restricted for 161 for 7.

Speaking after the match, Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Umesh Yadav rued the contrasting starts both the teams had. While the hosts were cruising at 79 for no loss after the end of the powerplay, the visitors were reeling at 44 for 2 in the same period.

“We gave away too many runs. In IPL, you need early wickets. We didn’t get that. We lacked a bit at the start. We also missed a catch. That harmed us pretty badly,” Yavad said at the post-match conference.

“Their bowlers did well and had a plan but also your confidence gets a huge boost when you 200 runs on the board. If we had managed to restrict them to 170-180, the match scenario would have been totally different. They began well unlike us. According to me, their bowlers did well, they started well. When we began, we conceded 50 in the first 4 overs. But they controlled it well. The difference (of runs conceded at the start) was a lot – there was a margin of 30 runs in their scoring and ours,” he added.

He further admitted that it was tough bowling to the marauding Warner before saying that he was not under pressure and he has the bowling figures to back his claim. On a night, when his fellow bowlers were conceding at an economy of over 10, he conceded only 30 runs in his quota of 4 overs.

“When a batsman is in good form and continuously hitting six and fours, it’s a little bit hard to bowl because he is set and knows about the wicket and its pace. But as a bowler, I don’t think it is hard because in IPL, this time of pressure (situation) can come at any time. So you have to be ready for that,” the India pacer said.

He also had a word of praise for Warner’s stunning knock before admitting that had Chris Woakes held on to the catch when Warner was batting on just 13, the match would have panned out differently. The visitors had to pay a hefty price for missing the opportunity, as the left-handed batsman hit the top gear right from that very point. In the next 11 balls, he hit three fours and as many well-timed sixes to reach his fifty off just 20 balls. He continued his onslaught even after reaching the fifty-run mark and completed his third IPL fifty in just 43 balls with the help of seven fours and eight sixes.

“He played beautifully and used all the chances and so got a hundred. He is a good batsman and has made too many centuries in ODIs and Tests. He is a world-class batsman,” Yadav said.

“If Woakes would have held onto his catch, obviously the game could’ve headed elsewhere. But these things happen in cricket. One day you hold on to your catch, but on another day you don’t. These things keep happening,” Umesh said.
