IPL 2017: Indian Umpires Require Mentorship To Improve, Says Krishna Hariharan

As the tenth edition of Indian Premier League edition witnessed early umpiring howlers, former international cricket umpire Krishna Hariharan, in his recent interview stated the local pool of umpires are supposed to have mentors around — to watch out for their on-field performances like selectors monitor players on the sidelines in a bid to induct players in the team.

The umpiring howlers have been one of the highlights of the tournament so far which further witnessed dissent from the players, who faced the brunt of it during the ongoing lucrative Twenty20 league.

“Like the selectors are constantly watching the players from the sidelines, you have to have mentors for umpires who can monitor their performance during the game and point out their positives and negatives right after the game,” Hariharan was quoted as saying by PTI.

The umpiring howlers have also witnessed the social media users targeting the local umpires, as Nitin Menon and CK Nandan were at the receiving end.

Hariharan stated the standard of umpiring can be improved while having the mentors around them before stating the necessary suggestion would help the Indian umpires in the foreseeable future.

The 61-year-old Hariharan revealed there hasn’t been set any long-standing mentorship regulation in the domestic circuit. However, Hariharan added these glaring mistakes can happen as humans are there to control the game.

“As of now, there is nobody to guide Indian umpires on the domestic circuit. We all know some umpiring howlers have been committed in the IPL and that can happen, human errors happen all the time,” Hariharan added.

Hariharan, who had officiated in 34 One-day Internationals and two Test matches pointed out that mentors should tell the umpires about their match performance soon after the game.

“But there should be a group of mentors to tell them after the game where they went wrong, where they went right, were they standing in the right position, things like that,” Hariharan further added.

Hariharan is also the part of the national governing body; Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), to give their valuable of suggestions regarding umpires at domestic circuit.

“We have already submitted our report (to the BCCI) in which we have proposed the appointment of mentors for the top 25 umpires of the country. The board will decide the future course of action,” revealed Hariharan.

The reviewing panel has also availed the services of former umpires which include I Shivram, VK Ramaswamt and Vijay Chopra.

Hariharan reiterated that the umpires are judged for their decisions while stating Decision Review System has put much pressure on umpires.

“Overall, I would say that Indian umpires are not bad at all. One has to keep in mind that umpires are always judged by their mistakes, not by the good decisions they make,” Hariharan concluded.

According to the latest development, 110 umpires were provided certification by the board (BCCI) itself.
