IPL 2017: Karn Sharma Relishing Competition In Mumbai Indians Camp
In the year 2014, Karn Sharma became the costliest uncapped player in the IPL auction as the leggie was purchased for an amount of 3.75 Crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, he was released by the franchise after 2016 IPL and it turned out to be a boon for him as he again shone in the IPL auction, garnering an amount of Rs.3.2 Crore, highest among an Indian player.
However, the heavy price tag did not ensure him a game as the franchise preferred Harbhajan Singh and Krunal Pandya over him, due to the main fact that both have been key to success for the team in past as well.
Karn’s presence in the playing XI has been mainly dependent upon injuries to other players. He played his first game when Krunal Pandya was injured. Pandya being fit for the next game meant Karn sat out. However, the opportunity came to him soon as Harbhajan Singh got injured and Karn got a game again.
Despite the lack of opportunities, Karn is relishing the competition on the side, as he said,
“It’s good when you have got so much competition. I always try to play well whenever I get an opportunity. Self-motivation is very important for me. We have (almost) qualified, but we can’t take anything lightly. We need to take this momentum into the knockouts as well.”
It has been a surprising move to keep out Karn as leg-spinners are making merry in the tournament. His place in the playing XI for the next game fully depends upon the fitness of Harbhajan Singh as if Bhajji will be fit for the next game. Karn might continue to sit out until the time these two players are fit.
Mumbai Indians will take on Delhi Daredevils in their next game on May 6 at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi.
