IPL 2017: Mahela Jayawardene Terms Decision ‘Difficult’ For Umpires, Calls Twenty20 Cricket ‘Funny’

Mumbai Indians coach and veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene said he has been following plenty of Twenty20 cricket after hosts won a thrilling contest against Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets on a penultimate delivery adding mistakes are expected to take place while having such a big tournament in place.

“I have seen enough T20 cricket, it happens. It’s a funny game. A bit of pressure and a few good shots created this opportunity for us,” Jayawardene was quoted as saying by PTI.

One Sunday night, Mumbai India chased down the target of 179 runs in front of the packed home crowd with a ball to spare.

“It was important to get points on board. Boys played well. After losing the first game, to come back that way showed character and quality,” Jaywardene said.

Former Sri Lankan skipper stated it was a remarkable win as players gave their best on the field while having the great belief in them.

“You always need to have that belief, happy that players had that belief. It was brilliant,” Jayawardene added.

The 39-year-old Jayawardene has also praised the youngsters, who did well while sealing the game for Mumbai.

“I am pretty pleased and I am glad two young players carried us through. Nitish [Rana] anchored the innings and took the game deep and Hardik [Pandya] came in and finished the job,” remarked Jayawardene.

However, the Sri Lankan star wasn’t pleased with the umpires’ decision during the sixth game of the Indian Premier League between Mumbai and Knight Riders as howlers continued to mar the hosts.

The incident took place when opener Jos Butler was given LBW. However, the replays suggested ball was clearly missing the leg stump.

Following the incident, Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma was also adjudged leg before when clear edge came off his bat.

The right-handed batsman Rohit was reprimanded by showing the dissent to on-field umpire which comes under IPL’s level one offence of its code of conduct.

“It’s difficult for umpires as well. It’s a high profile tournament and a lot of focus on everyone. It’s natural (to commit mistakes),” Jayawardene concluded.

Since the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008, the former right-handed batsman Jayawardene played 80 IPL matches in which he had scored 1,802 runs at an average of 28.60 runs. He had also scored 10 fifties and a hundred.
