IPL 2017 – Match 39 – Rising Pune Supergiant Vs Gujarat Lions – RPS Predicted XI

Rewind your memories to a couple of weeks ago, and barely anyone around would have entertained the prospects of the Rising Pune Supergiant pulling off some incredible bowling performances.

Well, the unit led by Australian skipper Steven Smith has found a rich vein of form in the games gone by and are now in serious contention for qualifying for the playoffs.

The victory they pulled over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Pune, where they strangled the visitors to below 100 despite the full quota of overs, was just the positivity emerging out of a unit that has found its momentum. If the veterans like MS Dhoni and Ben Stokes now bat to their potential, then this side could rake up further misery for other teams.

Their opponents, Gujarat Lions, on the other hand, come on the back of a heartbreak, which included a narrow loss in the Super Over against the Mumbai Indians. For the Lions, it was a case of so near, yet so far in their previous game.

A loss out here for the Lions will end their campaign, though outside permutations and combinations could still assist them later on.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER:

The two sides met on the 14th of April in Rajkot and it yielded the first win of the season for Suresh Raina’s team. The game though would be best remembered for Australian pacer Andrew Tye’s memorable IPL debut, as the Western Australian picked up a five-wicket haul, which included a hat trick.

Thanks to skipper Steven Smith’s 43, the hosts set a target of 172. The chase, however, turned out to be one-sided, as the Dwayne Smith- Brendon McCullum opening combination put on 100 within 11 overs to seal the game. Ultimately, the Lions won with two overs to spare.

 Recent form this season:

RPS: W, L, W, W, W

GL: L, W, L, W, L

Talking Points:

The inclusion of rookie New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson was an absolute masterstroke, as the pacer bowled his heart out against a top -notch batting lineup. Ferguson bowled as many as 18 dots in his spell and picked up two wickets, including the all important scalp of AB de Villiers. The Supergiant would be hoping for another splendid performance from the young seamer.

After missing a couple of games due to injury woes, all-rounder Ben Stokes should be back in the scheme of things. Stokes’ presence will add more weight to the batting of the team and in the death overs, he has been quite reliable with the ball.

RPS Predicted XI:

  1. R. Tripathy 2. A. Rahane 3. S. Smith (c) 4. MS Dhoni (wk) 5. M. Tiwary 6. B. Stokes 7. W. Sundar 8. L. Ferguson 9. J. Unadkat 10. D. Chahar 11. I. Tahir
