IPL 2017: Missing Out On Playoffs Would Have Been A Big Shame, Says David Warner
In an almost do or die game, Sunrisers Hyderabad walked past Gujarat Lions to seal birth in the playoffs. Chasing a target of 155, the visiting side went on to defeat the home side to hand them another defeat. Though it did not have any impact on Gujarat’s place on points table; but Hyderabad with this win ensured their place in playoffs.
The win wouldn’t have been possible if bowlers had not performed especially Mohammed Siraj, who scalped four wickets and also bagged the Man of the Match award.
He along with other bowlers marked an epic turnaround for the team to stop Gujarat on a score of 154, which was quite low after the first wicket partnership of 111 between Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan.
At the start, Hyderabad too found itself in a difficult situation when they were two down for a score of 25 but then the pair of Vijay Shakar and David Warner ensured that they do not lose even a wicket and also ensure a win. Both the experienced batsmen shared 133 runs for the third wicket and returned back only after booking a spot in the next round.
There are all possibilities of Hyderabad finishing league stage at any position on the points table, subjected to result of next two games.
Here is what David Warner, skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad, said after the win:
David Warner: It would have been a shame to miss out on the playoffs. We tried to communicate after the first wicket. When we lost a couple of wickets we realised the wicket was slowing up. Credit to Siraj for the way he bowled. India has got some brilliant pace bowling names.. from Bumrahs to Bhuvis to Ishant, the list just goes on. I think it is all about batting around to each other. To have the luxury to have guys come and rotate the strike in the middle overs. We are very happy. With the way this wicket was, we knew this was going to be tough as the ball got older. Obviously, we are not worrying about the next few games. We will take one game at a time. Thanks to all the people who came out to watch the last couple of games.
