IPL 2017: “Nadeem’s Spell Was Quite Crucial For Us,” Says Captain Zaheer Khan

Delhi Daredevils dominated visitors Kings XI Punjab in their first home game of the tournament, as the nation’s capital based franchise cruised to a win by a margin of 51 runs to win their second game on the trot.

When Zaheer Khan decided to bat first at the time of toss, it seemed like the home captain had read the conditions wrong but the way match progressed, Zaheer showed that he why he is the king of the jungle.

Despite the fear of dew factor later in the evening, Zaheer asked his men to bat first. Delhi batsmen passed the test, as they went to post a total of 188 combinedly, which was a record total in itself, as a target of 189 has never ever been chased at Kotla.

In the chase to this total, Punjab had an abysmal start, as their three top-order batsmen were back in the pavilion within first five overs of the game, thanks to a special piece of bowling from Shahbaz Nadeem.

The wickets continued to fall which wrote a script to a loss for Punjab team, as they could not get to the target in the allotted 20 overs, to lose the game by a margin of 51 runs.

Punjab registered their second consecutive loss, whereas, it was the second consecutive win for Delhi.

Here is what both the captains said after the game –

Glenn Maxwell:

“We were a bit behind with the bat there. Let them get 188 which was far too many on that wicket. We gave away probably 30 too many. There were too many boundary balls and we did not sustain the pressure. They got away at the back end. It (the wicket) stayed slow and did not allow us to get going. The execution from the bowlers has to improve. They have good plans going into the game, but it is about executing them in pressure situations. Axar Patel continues to show he is a superstar in the game, his all-round prowess was brilliant and KC (Cariappa) had a good day, apart from that it was a dull night.”

Zaheer Khan:

“Just doing the basics right. Got a decent start, not losing wickets in the first six. The wickets was on the slower side and we executed our plans well. On that wicket, it was important we gained momentum at the right time. Sanju and Billings provided a good start. We have good batters at the end, we have to provide a good foundation for them. Very dry. Especially Nadeem, the way he bowled, was crucial. I was also trying to bowl just cutters. Just holding our nerves and executing our plans well. So far so good. Hope to keep it going in the tournament.”

Here is what Man of the Man of the Match said –

Corey Anderson:

“It was a kind of wicket which was tough to get going on. Sam and Sanju did a really good job to provide the platform. We thought 160 might have been a reasonable target during one of those time-outs. In the end, it was probably 20 runs over par then we had to get. A good overall performance. Zaheer set some really interesting fields. We’ve got a class bowling side with Pat and Morris. It was a clinical performance from the bowlers and everyone did a great job. That’s valuable, being able to chop and change. It’s about finding the right guys to bowl to the right batsmen.”
