Suresh Raina’s side Gujarat Lions might have been ruled out of the playoffs race in this edition of the IPL, but that didn’t let his spirits down at all. Moments after being massacred by the young Indian duo of Sanju Samson and Rishab Pant, the veteran southpaw went on to term the two batsmen as the “future of Indian cricket”.
The onslaught from the Delhi Daredevils batsmen came after the side was set a mammoth 209 to win the game. The chase, however, turned out to be a walk in the park as Pant and Samson decimated the Lions bowlers brutally. As many as 20 massive sixes were hit from the Daredevils during the run chase. It was that sort of a run chase, where everyone falls short of superlatives.
Raina however, opened up after his side was ruled out, while also lavishly praising Pant and Samson.
“I think it is a Rishabh Pant day,” said Raina. “He batted really well along with Sanju Samson. We tried everything – the slower ball, yorker – but couldn’t stop the runs. The ball started reversing later, but by then the game was over. 208 actually was still defendable but we didn’t bowl well.”
Raina also opened up on the players which his side lost to injuries. Two crucial blows came in the form of injuries to ace all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and death overs specialist Andrew Tye.
“We miss the experience of Tye and Bravo. Rishabh and Sanju are the future of the Indian team. I have been hitting the ball really well, maybe I would say 20 runs short, but credit to Sanju and Rishabh,” Raina concluded.
