IPL 2017: Rashid Khan Stars With Ball As Warner, Henriques Fifties Guide Sunrisers Hyderabad To A Nine-Wicket Win Over Gujarat Lions

In a one-sided encounter, following the all-round show, Sunrisers Hyderabad thrashed Gujarat Lions by nine wickets in the sixth fixture of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday evening which was played at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad.

While chasing the target of 136 runs, Skipper David Warner led from the front by playing a blistering knock of 76 off just 45 balls to see hosts home in the 16th over (15.3 overs) of the match to register a clinical win with a maximum to see visitors losing their second game on the trot.

Moises Henriques, who played a vital role in the 108-run partnership with Warner, scored unbeaten 52 off 39 balls and it was also his second consecutive fifty in this season of the lucrative league.

Coming into the scene in the 10th over, the jam-packed stadium made a huge noise after opening batsman Warner picked up the shoe off debutant Basil Thampi before tossing it in his hand while scampering for a single.

The moment took place when Warner was heading toward the striker’s end after a nudge from his partner Moises Henriques.

The only wicket came for Lions in the fourth over, when Parveen Kumar came round the wicket and did the trick for visitors.

It was Shikhar Dhawan (9 off 9 balls), who tried to guide the ball on an onside as the ball took an edge of the blade to see Brendon McCullum completing the skier.

Earlier, after Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper David Warner won the toss and elected to field first, Gujarat Lions were completely outfoxed by Hyderabad bowlers after a decent start to their innings.

Basil Thampi scored 13* off 8 balls and Parveen Kumar scored seven on seven balls to see visitors posting the total of 135 runs on the board in 20 overs.

For Hyderabad, the pick of the bowler was Rashid Khan, who did early damage by eking three wickets to take control of the situation. In four overs Rashid conceded 19 runs to be named as Man of the Match.

“He [Rashid Khan] is a superstar in the making,” said Warned during the post-match presentation.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar also picked two wickets, whereas, Ashish Nehra claimed just one.

In 18th over, Dhawal Kulkarni was run out by Rashid, who had all the time in the world to aim at strikers end from the mid-wicket region.

After on-field umpire went upstairs, the replays suggested the non-striker Parveen didn’t show any interest for a run before sending Kulkarni back into his crease.

However, wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik and batsman Dwayne Smith steadied the Gujarat Lions’ sinking ship while rotating the strike in a bid to take their team to a decent total before being removed in quick succession.

Karthik (30 off 32 balls) was removed by senior Hyderabad left-arm fast bowler Ashish Nehra after banging the ball short which took the outside edge of the bat, as it went straight into the gloves of Naman Ojha.

Smith returned to the pavilion, as the ball came from the lower half of the bat to see substitute Vijay Shankar completing the catch in deep.

Karthik and Smith posted 56 runs on the board for the fifth wicket as Lions were reduced to 57 for four in nine overs.

Smith scored 37 off 27 balls before one-handed shot saw Lions lost the well-set batsman.

The emerging star Rashid was once again in business in the ninth over as he caught Gujarat skipper Suresh Raina plumb in front. Raina had no idea where the bowl was going before it thud into his pad.

In seventh over, Rashid bowled a googly to deceive Aaron Finch (3 off 5 balls), who had a celebratory run while acting like an aeroplane. The replay suggested ball was clipping the leg stump.

Jason Roy (31 off 21 balls), who looked in good touch, was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar after Shikhar Dhawan completed a dipping catch at the mid-wicket region.

Both the umpires went upstairs after making a soft call by declaring Roy out.

The replays suggested Dhawan had fingers well underneath the ball as zoomer was also introduced before Roy trudged off while nodding his head in utter disappointment.

Rising to the occasion, Rashid Khan broke the opening stand which looked threatening when he caught Gujarat Lions skipper Brendon McCullum (5 off 10 balls) plumb in front of the stumps in the fourth over of the game.

It could’ve been two in two for rookie Rashid when Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper David Warner grassed an opportunity at the slip cordon as Suresh Raina edged very first ball he has faced.
