It was a special effort from Mumbai to win the game as the way they started their innings, it was the last thing that any of the Mumbai players would have wanted. They were two down with a score of just eight on the board but somehow managed to steer the boat to a score of 129, thanks to efforts from Krunal Pandya, who played an innings of 47 at a time where the IPL trophy was at stake.
Mumbai had a tough task to defend this low total but the slow nature of the pitch worked in their favour, even when Pune had time, wickets and overs by their side.
Starting up, Jasprit Bumrah grabbed the first wicket by dismissing Rahul Tripathi in third over of Pune’s innings. It seemed like it was the only wicket which Mumbai will get as Ajinkya Rahane and Steven Smith were batting comfortably but meanwhile, they failed to increase the run rate, probably keeping in the mind the low target ahead of them.
This cost Mumbai as MS Dhoni and even Steven Smith could not up the ante at the last moment of the game.
The match was down to the last over, with Mitchell Johson with the ball in his left hand. He was hit for a four by Manoj Tiwary, the man who stole a last over thriller in IPL final 2012. It seemed like all is done and dusted for Mumbai and from there, they made a comeback from a stage where many international teams would have also falerted.
Mitchell johnson showed the way to Tiwary and Smith on next two balls, and then defended five from last three, to maintain a difference of one run between final scores of both the teams and hence, Mumbai Indians won the cup for the third time.
It was a tough win for them but there was a big lesson for everyone that the show is not over until its really over.
