Kings XI Punjab pacer Sandeep Sharma has been docked 50 percent of his match for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during the match against Gujarat Lions in Mohali on Sunday (May 7). The Glenn Maxwell-side had gone on to lose the crucial match by six wickets.
The 23-year old Kings XI pace spearhead admitted to Level 1 offence 2.1.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials and accepted the sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding. The sub-section h of article 2.1.5 article states that: “arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the umpire about his decision. It shall not be a defence to any charge brought under this article to show that the umpire might have, or in fact did, get any decision wrong”.
The incident had happened in the fifth over of Gujarat Lions’ when Sandeep’s penultimate delivery was called a no ball by A. Nand Kishore. The on-field umpire had given his decision thinking that the bowler had not informed him before switching sides. However, the bowler thought otherwise which led to a heated discussion between the bowler and the official. Captain Glenn Maxwell also joined the discussion soon to express his disappointment over the decision.

The defeat, meanwhile, has dealt a body blow to Kings XI’s hopes of making it to the playoffs. The runners-up of 2014 season rode on Hashim Amla’s second IPL century to post 189 for 3 in the allotted 20 overs. However, Dwayne Smith played a whirlwind knock of 74 runs off just 39 balls to help the Lions chase down the total with two balls remaining.
Kings XI Punjab are currently fifth in the table with 5 wins in 11 matches and need to win all their remaining matches to have any chance of qualifying to the next stage.
