IPL 2017 – Steve Smith Delighted After Win, Calls Ben Stokes “Quality Guy”
With great match winning abilities, comes a great price tag for any player in the IPL. When Ben Stokes was first given such a bulky pay cheque, it surely irked a few individuals who begged to differ.
But after his sheer heroics against the Gujarat Lions in Pune, not a single person around would have the audacity to criticise that move at the auction table.
Bringing all his skills into play, Stokes brought life back into the run chase which seemed dead at one stage with the score being 10-3. In pursuit of 162, the Supergiant seemed down and out but with Stokes and Dhoni in the middle things began changing quickly.
With 60 needed off five overs, Stokes set off and eventually won his team the game, while also getting to his century.
After the win, Steven Smith was in complete awe of Stokes and called him a “quality guy”.
“Great effort from the bowlers to pull it back,” said Smith. “One of the balls hit the side of the hoarding, taking a chunk out of it, and the ball started reversing. That made things easier. The tournament is about peaking at the right time. Hopefully, it’s not too early. Five or six games in a row here. Hopefully, we can keep that up. Stokesey is a quality guy, that’s why we picked him up,” said Smith.
“It wasn’t an ideal start. We have some artillery in the shed. The partnership between MS and Stokes was magnificent; they took it deep. We know we can hit sixes here; one of the easier grounds in India to hit sixes,” the Pune captain added.
Man of the Match Ben Stokes elaborated on what was going on between him and MS Dhoni in the middle.
“It’s great to be a part of both sides of the game; that’s the best thing about being an all-rounder. We lost a few early wickets, and the start didn’t help. I and MS tried to tick along and get something going. We wanted to attack early, then cool off to take it over by over. It’s always nice, personal accolades and stuff like that, but we are on a roll as a team. If we keep performing like this, we can see ourselves in the final. I think the rest did me some good,” said Stokes.
