IPL 2017: Suresh Raina Thanks Fans After Reaching 4500-IPL Runs And Win Over Kings XI Punjab
Monday (May ) was a day to remember for Gujarat Lions skipper Suresh Raina as a captain as well as a batsman. During the match against Kings XI Punjab, he became the first player in the history of the Indian Premier League to cross the 4500-run mark and his occasion was made more memorable as his team registered an impressive win over the Glenn Maxwell-led side in a high-scoring encounter.
Chasing 190, the Gujarat Lions, already out of contention for a playoff spot, needed a strong start and Dwayne Smith rose to the occasion. The hard-hitting batsman from the Caribbeans, who had failed to make much of an impact in the previous matches, fired on all cylinders when his team needed him the most. With Brendon McCullum out of the tournament with injury, Smith took the onus on himself to give the Lions a flying start and in Ishan Kishan, he got the perfect partner. The duo added 91 runs in just 9.1 overs before Kishan was dismissed for 29. Smith was dismissed after scoring 74 runs off just 39 balls with the scorecard reading 120.
Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik then took care of the chase, scoring 39 and 35 respectively as the Lions chased down the target with 2 balls remaining to register their fourth win this season. Raina, meanwhile, became the first batsman to cross the 4500-run mark in the history of the tournament when he crossed seven runs in his innings. Raina has now scored 4532 runs in 159 matches while Virat Kohli, who is second in the list, has scored 4360 runs in 148 outings.
Earlier in the match, Hashim Amla had scored his second century of the tournament, only the third player to do so in an IPL season, to steer his team to a huge total of 189 for 3. However, the bowlers failed to put up a good performance as the Kings XI’s playoff chances were dented with their sixth loss in 11 matches.
After the match ended, a delighted Raina took to Twitter to congratulate his team as well as Hashim Amla for the brilliant knock. He also expressed his delight over becoming the first player to get to 4500 IPL runs.
“Well done @TheGujaratLions and excellent innings @amlahash. Proud to reach 4500 runs! Thank you all for your love and support ? Way to go!,” the southpaw tweeted.
