IPL 2017: In T20 You Have To Learn From The Past And Move On: Ajinkya Rahane

Rising Pune Supergiant stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane has rued the lack of big partnerships while chasing the mammoth total against Delhi Daredevils on Tuesday (April 11).

Before the tenth edition of the Indian Premier had begun, Rising Pune Supergiant were hell-bent to show they meant business this season. The new-comers had a dismal outing in their inaugural season, somehow managing to avoid the wooden spoon after winning their final group game.  But they were desperate to turn it around this season and took all-possible measures for the same. They bought England all-rounder Ben Stokes at a record price in the auction and even replaced MS Dhoni with Steve Smith as the captain of the team. The decision looked a wise one as the Australia skipper led them to a convincing win in the first match against Mumbai Indians. But two matches later, the team is once again finding itself riddled with the same problems that haunted them last season.

After suffering a heavy defeat against Kings XI Punjab in their last game, they had their task cut out against Delhi Daredevils who too had lost their previous match. But even before the start of the match they suffered a big setback as their maverick skipper Steve Smith had to sit out due to a stomach problem. Playing without him was always going to be tough but the way the Pune-based outfit capitulated against Delhi, it will be enough to send worrying signs in the team management.

For the third time in a row, the Pune bowlers failed to do well as Delhi, led by a brilliant ton from Sanju Samson, posted a massive total of 205 for 4.  In reply, the Pune batsmen outdid their bowler’s poor effort and were disastrous as they were bowled out for 108 in the 17th over. Only two batsmen (Mayank Agarwal and Rajat Bhatia) managed to cross the 15-run mark.

Speaking after the match, Rahane credited Samson and Chris Morris, who scored 38 off only 9 balls, for the huge score before ruing the lack of partnerships while chasing the huge total.

“I thought 180-190 would be good on this wicket. Credit to Delhi; Sanju (Samson) in the middle and Chris Morris at the end. I think our bowlers bowled well in the middle; Tahir and Zampa. Delhi got the momentum in the last three overs. No blame at all. When you are chasing a big target you need two big partnerships and we didn’t get that. In T20 you have to learn from the past and move on. We have to believe in our ability and look forward to the next game,” he said.

Pune’s next game is against Gujarat Lions on April 14.
