IPL 2017: Top Five Players With Most Sixes in An Innings

Home many times we had witnessed the balls hitting the top-tiers of the stadiums before being returned on the field?

Let’s put in numbers what we had observed many times – to see balls sailing over the boundary line before it changed the complexion of a game which further saw the white balls changing the colours.

Such became the trepidation of the bowlers, in the literal context when batsmen with heavy bats sealed the show on flat surfaces where bowlers tried their best – to contain the batsmen, but of no avail as their counterparts take them to cleaners.

As the tenth edition of cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL), is a day away we have compiled the list of most sixes so far in an innings smashed by the players since the inaugural edition of 2008 IPL.

They’ve stood tall for their respective teams while playing some incredible innings before delivering killer punches – to entertain the jam-packed stadiums as IPL is seen as another festival in India.

From the lowest team scores to highest totals, to sensational catches to sublime shots, to thrilling super overs – to splendid spells; the IPL has been home to every bit of it.

As the action-filled package will unfold on April 5, all teams are eyeing to make their mark one way or another while banking on their star players.

Unfortunately, several celebrated cricketers will miss the season after suffering from different injuries.

By leaving the indelible mark, the players interestingly in the list included all foreign players, in the past nine editions.

Following the rollicking performances with the bat, there are several domestic cricketers, who have had enough capability to score big and dominate the bowlers by their fearsome approach in the middle.

In the recent past, every season had witnessed pool of talented players joining the IPL and delivered at the bigger stage before being effusively praised by their seniors in the squad.

As the inception of Indian Premier League has opened the gates for the young talent from India, there were many in the list, who had knocked the doors of selection committee before breaking into the national squad by their superlative performances.

Let’s have the look at five batsmen, who had plundered runs with the bat in placid and bowling-friendly conditions. They racked up the numbers at the staggering rate during the first nine seasons of IPL.

Here’s the list of five players, who had smashed the most number of sixes in an innings so far:

Number Five – Chris Gayle (117 off 57 balls) 12 sixes against Kings XI Punjab in Bengaluru on May 6, 2015:

Chris Gayle is now third time being listed in this most sixes category in an innings and he’s certainly for a reason here for his overwhelming efforts.

Against Kings XI Punjab, Gayle blasted 117 runs off 57 balls which included 12 sixes at the strike rate of 205.26.

With his high back-lift that makes him a staunch against the white-ball, Gayle had lit M Chinnaswamy stadium again on May 06, 2015 in the eighth edition of IPL when he littered Punjab’s bowling line-up.

Gayle’s innings led his side to 138 run win over Punjab after celebrating his triple figure mark on 46 balls by copying ace footballer Cristiano Ronaldo which was icing on the cake for a muscular Windies batsman.

Number Four – AB de Villiers  (129 off 52 balls) 12 sixes against Gujarat Lions at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 14, 2016:

AB de Villiers, the most reliable man in the global league has been a cornerstone for RCB since he had made his appearance for them.

The right-handed batting sensation has delivered gold and we are recollecting the memories from his 129-run innings against Gujarat Lions when he smoked 12 sixes in the innings at the staggering strike-rate of 248.

For his 78 minute stay at the crease, he faced 52 balls which further included 10 boundaries in his splendid knock on May 14, 2016, in the match number 44 which Bangalore eventually won by 144 runs.

Knows as a 360-degree man, de Villiers has changed the game on its head while plundering runs at his will.

Number Three – Chris Gayle (128 off 62 balls) 13 sixes against Delhi Daredevils on May 17, 2012, at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi

It’s Chris Gayle again who has smashed 13 sixes against Delhi Daredevils on 17 May 2012, when he posted 128 off 62 balls at the strike-rate of 206.45.

In match number 67, Gayle has shown his immense power again by smashing the hosts’ bowlers all round the park which also included towering sixes that made the stadium alive even playing away from his home.

The burly Gayle is spectacular with the bat and given to his day he could destroy bowlers with his stand and deliver style.

Number Two – Brendon McCullum (158 off 73 balls) 13 sixes against Royal Challengers Bangalore at April 18, 2008, in Bengaluru:

Superlative show from former wicket-keeper batsman Brendon McCullum has always remained the epicentre for the followers of the gentleman’s game.

The right-handed batsman has remained an astute thinker of the game before leading his side from the front in the past.

McCullum is known for having the fast hands and he makes a cut shot feast for the eyes.

The remarkable McCullum has played a gem of a knock in the inaugural edition and equally match of the IPL against Bengaluru after sponsors were looking to settle with the new brainchild of Board of Control for India (BCCI) in the global competition. So far, the IPL has impressed the fans and cricketers across the globe with its success.

On April 18, 2008, the right-handed Kiwis product had been brutal with willow as he amassed 158 runs in just 73 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders which was laced with 13 sixes at the strike rate of 216.43 runs.

Number One – Chris Gayle (175* off 66 balls) 17 sixes against Kochi Tuskers on April 23, 2013, at Bengaluru:

Chris Gayle is one of the true characters of the game of cricket and he becomes invincible when it comes to the Twenty20 carnival.

The giant force Gayle becomes devastating when he holds the big bat to wield the bat like an axe.

The West Indies recruit has played a significant role for Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore season after another.

The brute force has played 92 IPL matches in which he has smashed 251 sixes which is a record number in terms of sixes in IPL.

Who could forget his unbeaten 175-run knock of the sixth IPL edition in the 31st match against Pune Warriors at Bengaluru where he had taken the Warriors’ bowlers to the cleaners during his 102-minute stay at the crease before Bangalore won the match by 130 runs as Warriors were bundled out for 133 runs?

The left-handed batsman Gayle puts on minimum efforts to get the maximum result and he was outstanding with the bat on April 23rd in 2013. His gusty knock at the strike-rate of 265.15 was laced with 17 sixes in which several cleared the long distance like Gayle sets his stance.

The blazing performance from Gayle is topping the charts of most sixes in an innings so far in all past nine IPL editions.
