With a loss in Sunday’s game, Kings XI Punjab was shown the doors from the tournament, as the Glenn Maxwell-led side failed to win the ultimate decider and it was Pune that won and went on to climb to the second spot directly in the points table with the dominant show.
Kings XI Punjab had the worst of the starts, as they lost their first wicket on the first delivery of the game when Martin Guptill was caught by Manoj Tiwary. The wicket of the opener kick started the fall of wickets, as Pune pacers made most of the conditions, especially Shardul Thakur, who was the main bowler.
Though it was Unadkat who provided the first breakthrough for the team but it was Thakur who went on to make the most out of it.
The bowler completed his quota of four overs in his first spell and took three wickets for just 19 runs. His spell was enough to flatten Punjab’s batting line-up and in the end, visitors could just manage a low total of 73 on the board.
Without any sort of trouble, Pune eclipsed the target with the loss of just one wicket and kept them active in the race to win the IPL trophy for the first time.
Here is what KXIP skipper Glenn Maxwell said after the loss against RPS –
Maxwell:
The toss had something to do with the result. The wicket was a bit damp, we didn’t adjust properly – but those sort of things happens in t20 cricket. We didn’t assess the conditions, lost a wicket first ball and never recovered. Those things happen, happened to DD against us, now it happened to us. It’s a lot easier to chase down scores in this tournament and me losing so many tosses didn’t help. We can take a lot of positives from the tournament, we played to our plans and fought hard, Axar had a great tournament. Thankful to our supporters for the way they backed us.
