MS Dhoni showed glimpses of his old form during his 25-ball 28 runs knock but Rising Pune Supergiant squandered a good chance to capitalise on a good start and were restricted to 161 for eight by Royal Challengers Bangalore at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.
After being asked to bat first, the visitors went off to a flying start with their openers Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi adding 63 runs off just 46 balls.
But the dismissal of both the batsmen in a space of six runs had put Pune in a spot of bother before MS Dhoni and Steve Smith steadied the ship with 58-runs stand.
Both the batsmen mixed caution with aggression to lay the platform for a good total but just when they were looking to open their arms, Dhoni was clean bowled by Shane Watson for 28.
Before that, the under-fire former skipper had hit a six off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal over the stadium roof to bring back memories of the past but could not convert his start into a good knock. The visitors then lost their skipper Smith on the same score before Adam Milne dismissed Ben Stokes and Shardul Thakur in consecutive deliveries to leave Pune reeling at 130 for seven.
Manoj Tiwary then played a handy knock of 26 off 10 balls to steer his team to a respectable total.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the innings:
