Former India openers – Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s partnerships during their heydeys were second to none. From stealing quick singles, mixing caution with aggression, to complementing each other, it is quite safe to say that the players from Delhi were made for each other. Their camaraderie is still talked about in the cricketing fraternity. However, their friendship, it seems, has turned sour with the passage of time. The duo does not seem to agree on the same thing anymore.
Recently, they found themselves on opposite ends of a debate around 20-year-old Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur. Sehwag had courted controversy by taking a dig at Gurmehar Kaur but Gambhir contradicted his former India teammate by throwing his support firmly behind the student. And the former players are once again involved in an unwanted situation.
Gambhir had taken a sly dig at India pacer Ishant Sharma after he remained unsold in this year’s players auction for the Indian Premier League.
Expressing his surprise over Ishant’s base price of Rs 2 crore, Gambhir had said:
“I was surprised to see Ishant Sharma’s base price. I think it was too high.”
Gambhir had further said nobody would be willing to pay such an amount for just 4 overs.
The pacer has now been signed as a replacement for Murali Vijay by Kings XI Punjab. The pacer had revealed that how Sehwag, who is the head of cricket operations for the Punjab-based franchise, played a big role in helping him get an IPL deal for this year.
But when Sehwag announced the news that Ishant Sharma was joining Kings XI Punjab at a media interaction, a journalist was quick to remind him of Gambhir’s comment.
Not the once to mince his words, Sehwag said:
“Tell me one thing, who pays your Rs 12 crore for playing 60 balls then?”
The comment from Sehwag was clearly a dig towards his former partner who was bought for a whopping amount of Rs 11..04 crore in 2011 by Kolkata Knight Riders. Well, the tenth edition of the IPL has just begun but Sehwag has already spiced up the tournament. Both the teams will lock horns against each other on April 13 at the Eden Gardens and it will be interesting to see how Gambhir replies.
