IPL 2017: Watch: Gautam Gambhir’s Recent Slump In Form Continues Against Mumbai Indians
A win in the ongoing match against Mumbai Indians would not only seal Kolkata Knight Riders’ spot in this year’s playoffs but would also but confirm their place top-two of the league table, giving them two shots to make it to the finals. And their bowlers did a pretty decent job to restrict Mumbai Indians to 173 for 5 on a good batting pitch.
However, Kolkata’s dangerous opening combination of Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn could not give their side the usual blazing start as the former was dismissed for a 4-ball duck by Tim Southee in the very first over. The onus was now on Lynn and skipper Gautam Gambhir to steer their team to a win.
Gambhir, who was in brilliant form in the initial matches of the tournament, had struggled in the last few matches, scoring only 57 runs in the last four outings. However, the southpaw looked in his elements right from the start against Mumbai as he raced away to 21 runs off just 15 balls with the help of three fours and a six. The left-handed batsman was not shying away from playing the big shots but had to pay a big price while attempting a similar shot.
Kolkata were 41 for 2 in 4.2 overs when Mitchell Johnson bowled a short delivery which Gambhir tried to pull. However, he could not execute the shot perfectly due to the speed of the delivery and ended up top-edging it. The ball went up high towards short fine-leg and looked a pretty tough catch but Karn Sharma judged it brilliantly to complete a good catch.
Here is the clip of that dismissal:
