The last few editions of the Indian Premier League have witnessed an interesting tussle between Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Whenever, the former India skipper came out to bat, Gambhir greeted him with some close-in fielders which are a rare sight in the shortest format of the game especially during the overs when Dhoni usually comes out to bat.
However, Gambhir never shied away from putting his India teammate under pressure right from the word go by stationing fielders at slip, leg slip and silly point.
But for a change, Dhoni, who is known for making slow starts against spinners, came out all guns blazing right from the word go. He managed to score only one run off the first two balls but changed gears when Piyush Chawla came to bowl the next over.
He took a double on the first ball before hitting him for a four and a six. In the next over, he launched Kuldeep Yadav for a six and raced to 23 off just 10 balls.
Dhoni was looking well-set to inflict further damage on the two-time IPL champions before Gautam Gambhir took the brave decision of handing the ball to chinaman spinner for the 18th over. With just three overs left, it was very expected that Dhoni would go all out to collect some quick runs and probably that was the reason that convinced Gambhir to play the gamble and he was duly rewarded for it.
After Steve Smith took a single off the first ball to give Dhoni the strike, the former Rising Pune Supergiant skipper danced down the track to hit the spinner for a big shot. However, Kuldeep, who has impressed one and all with his recent performances, bowled a googly which Dhoni failed to pick.
Consequently, the ball went straight into the hands of Robin Uthappa who made no mistake in taking off the bails.
Here is a clip of that wicket:
