Catches win matches, the old adage says and Martin Guptill’s sensational grab at the boundary rope to dismiss a well-set Lendl Simmons in the ongoing match against Mumbai Indians has a good chance to prove it.
Chasing an improbable 230, Mumbai Indian went off to a flying start with their openers- Parthiv Patel and Lendl Simmons- adding 99 runs off just 52 balls before the former was dismissed by Mohit Sharma. However, Simmons’ presence was still a big worry for the Kings XI in the must-win game as the West Indian was running away with the game with his explosive batting. The right-handed batsman had already raced to 59 off just 31 deliveries and the Glenn Maxwell-led side needed a moment of brilliance to get rid of him.
Well, the brilliance was provided by none other than their New Zealand recruit Martin Guptill. The Mumbai Indians were 106 for 1 in the tenth over when Simmons hit a full toss from Maxwell towards the long-on boundary. Simmons, like many Kings XI fielders and most in the crowd at Wankhede, must have thought he had done enough to clear Guptill on the long-on boundary for a six. The Kiwi batsman, though, had other ideas. Timing his jump to perfecting, Guptill plucked off a sensational one-handed catch.
Here is a clip of that sensational catch:
