IPL 2018: Axar Patel Reckons KXIP’s Focus is on ‘Strength’ and ‘Improvement’
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) all-rounder Axar Patel, who missed the last game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) believes they need to back their own strengths against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday at the IS Bindra Stadium at Mohali.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad is coming back from three straight wins and will be oozing with confidence. They have put up a strong performance in all the three games with both their batting and bowling coming good.
However, Punjab has had a mixed start with two wins from three games so far.
The hosts have struggled because of their fast bowling. The seamers have failed to contain runs and need to come good in the next outing.
Need to focus on own strength
Patel, who has played 38 One-day Internationals and 11 Twenty20 Internationals for India, feels they need to to be confident and avoid thinking about the opposition.
“We are not thinking about Sunrisers Hyderabad’s success in the tournament but focusing on our strengths and trying to work on our mistakes. Like we are having a problem in death overs and also when one wicket falls down, thereafter, two or three also fall. We need to be positive and give our best with improvements,” Axar said.
Talking about their fast bowlers, Patel backed them saying that it’s a ritual in T20 cricket.
“T20 is like that only. Two out of five bowlers emerge expensive in a match. The good thing is we have a good bench strength in the fast bowling department. Mohit, Barinder and Ankit Rajpoot are there,” feels Patel.
Spinners play an important role: Patel
The 24-year-old Axar feels that spinners are play an important part in Punjab’s scheme of things.
Axar Patel along with skipper Ravichandran Ashwin and Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman is an important cog in that line-up.
“Spinners do play an important role in Kings XI Punjab scheme of things. Although we are different from each other, like Ashwin is an off-spinner essentially, I am a left-arm spinner while Mujeeb bowls with great variations at 17. He is doing well and able to dodge the opposition. Our role is to bowl tightly in the middle-overs and get wickets which release pressure from fast bowlers back in the death overs,” Patel concluded.
