IPL 2018: Not a Big Fan of Ashwin’s Leg-Spin – Kris Srikkanth
The decision of R Ashwin to bowl leg-spin during IPL has not gone well with former Indian batsman, Kris Srikkanth.
In his column for TOI, Srikkanth wrote he is not a big fan of Ashwin’s leg-spin and added Ashwin does not need to prove anything,
“At the same time, I am not a big fan of Ashwin bowling leg spin. With the variations up his sleeve as an offspinner and the ability to take the ball away from the right-hander, I feel Ashwin has enough to trouble the best in business. Given his track record (in all formats), I don’t think Ashwin needs to prove anything more,” he wrote for TOI.
Ashwin decided to bowl leg-spin in the IPL following his axing from team India’s limited-overs format.
The leg-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav were given a chance for the Sri Lanka limited-overs series after the completion of Test series. They both grabbed the opportunity and went on to retain their place during team India’s home season and for the tour of South Africa as well.
They have just been confined to Test format and play only Tests. Leg-spin has become a new trend in limited-overs format, especially in T20 cricket. It saw both Chahal and Kuldeep doing well and keeping their place in the side.
It also forced R Ashwin to look for options, and he had also started bowling leg-spin. He had bowled well till now, but he is yet to bowl leg-spin in international cricket. He bowls wrist spin only as a surprise factor, and bowling off-spinners is his main act at international level.
It will be during the Test match against Afghanistan when one will get to know whether Ashwin will leg-spin as the main weapon or a surprise factor only? Jadeja, on the other hand, has also started working to make a comeback in the limited-overs format.
He has started playing extra attention on his batting and is working hard to make a comeback. With 2019 World Cup just 13 months away, Ashwin and Jadeja have less time, and they need to do well to play in the World Cup.
