IPL 2018: Not Picking Up Wickets Pushed Us Back: Andre Russell

Andre Russell would have thought that he had done enough to ensure a win for Kolkata Knight Riders against Chennai Super Kings. In one of the best power-hitting displays that the league has ever seen, Russell tore apart the hosts with his whirlwind knock.

He came in at a time when the Knight Riders were in a precarious position after being reduced to 89 for 5.  But when the innings ended, the scoreboard was reading a daunting 202 for 6. Russell was the chief architect of the huge score with his blistering knock. The Jamaican scored 88* off just 36 balls with the help of 11 sixes and a four.

Russell’s knock was studded with 11 sixes and a four

ower-hitting in a 36-ball 88 not out, studded with 11 sixes, seemed to have given enough. But CSK overhauled KKR’s 202/6 with a ball to spare at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday.

However, the Super Kings managed to beat the Knight Riders in the high-scoring thriller, Riding on Sam Billings 23-ball 55 runs knock they reached home with a ball remaining.

Speaking after the game Russell rued the fact that the bowlers did not execute their plans perfectly.

“I have played a lot of T20 games and seen scores of 190 and 200 plus, and you still lose the game. It was important to start well and important to bowl as tight as possible and getting wickets,” he said.

Super Kings came all out guns blazing during the chase. Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu took the team past the 50-run mark in the very fourth over. Tom Curran dismissed Shane Watson in the sixth over but by then the latter had done his work. The former Australia international scored 42 off just 19 balls. At the end of the powerplay, the scoreboard was reading a daunting 75 for 1. The hosts looked a bit lost for while before Billings changed the course of the game.

Russell said that the team was confident of winning the game after posting the huge score. He also said that the team needs to learn from the mistakes and need to execute it plans.

“We were confident going out to field with 202 on the board. It was a good team effort. I am not going to point fingers and say this guy didn’t bowl well or this guy didn’t bowl well. We just have to learn from this and take it another step. It showed that we need more yorkers and be more precise about what we going to bowl,” he said.

Billings scored 55 off 23

On a personal level, it was a great comeback for Russell who was retained by the franchise, after the low of a year-long ban for flouting doping control norms. He then suffered a hamstring injury playing in the Pakistan Super League.

“My confidence level is really high, once you are confident in whatever sport you play, that is all you need,” the 29-year-old said. “This one year, it made me a different person. I have learnt to be humble and to make sure to be on top of whatever you do as a professional and make sure these things don’t happen again.”

“I’m in good condition, won’t say 100 percent, but I’m happy. With a few more games, I will be where I want to be.” Russell said.

Russell went on to reveal the warning he delivered to his teammates when the came out to defend the total.

“It was a good wicket. I said to the guys in the huddle before we went out ‘guys, don’t get too excited about this 200 plus on the board.’ I was striking the ball out there and was unstoppable. Once a guy gets set on that wicket, he is going to hurt us,” he said.

“We didn’t keep picking up wickets and that is what pushed us back. If we got maybe four wickets inside the first 10 overs, we would be in a better position. That would be perfect against a team chasing a big total,” he added.
