IPL 2018: The Plan was to Bowl as Many Dot Balls as Possible: Rashid Khan

For the second game in a row, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) came up with a bowling performance that is bound to cause a lot of worries in the opposition camp.

The Hyderabad-based outfit had started their campaign with a thumping nine-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals. And the juggernaut continued to roll against defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) too.

For the most part of the game, Sunrisers was on top before a late collapse invited some unexpected nervousness.

Bowling first, the Sunrisers restricted the formidable Mumbai batting lineup to a modest 147 for nine. What is even more commendable that the team did it in the absence of their pace spearhead Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

In his absence, Afghanistan star Rashid Khan stepped up and did his job brilliantly. He conceded only 13 runs off his four overs and picked up a wicket. The performance helped him bag the Man of the Match award.

Out of the 24 deliveries, Rashid bowled 18 dots as Mumbai batsmen never found the momentum against him. It created pressure and the wickets fell from the other end.

Speaking after the game, Rashid said, the team plan was to bowl as many dot balls as possible.

“It was much-needed. Always need to contribute well in the team’s performance. It was a good performance to restrict them to under 150. Was a good bowling effort, all the boys bowled really well. Dot balls are crucial in such a short format. THAT WAS THE PLAN TO BOWL AS MANY DOT BALLS AS POSSIBLE,” SAID RASHID.

The 19-year-old wily bowler Rashid believes he is backing himself to deliver for the team.

“That was the message from the management to go and enjoy yourself – that’s what I did. I just try my best to bowl in good length areas and mix it up for the batsmen. As he’s in his stance, I can see where he’s trying to hit. Love to bowl both, the leg-spinner and the googly,” he added.

Chasing 148, Sunrisers were looking set to register a comfortable win. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Wriddhiman Saha had added 62 runs for the first wicket.

However, Saha’s departure opened the floodgates and Sunrisers found themselves reeling at 107 for five.

Deepak Hooda and Yusuf Pathan then took them close to the win with a 29-run stand.  But the match came down to the one run required off the last ball with one wicket in hand. Billy Stanlake then managed to strike a boundary.

“That happens, T20 is all about this; sometimes you will go well and suddenly everything will change,” said Rashid.

“It was a good experience for us, (we) learned a lot of things… especially for the batsmen (in the sense) that until the last run (is scored) the match is not finished. Everyone should take the responsibility and play till the end,” he added.

“That was a good wake-up call for us for the upcoming matches. It was a good team effort, but it happens in T20, sometimes you lose many wickets in a short time. We will learn from it and hopefully not repeat it in the upcoming matches,” he concluded.
