Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer believes coach Ricky Ponting’s ‘go for the kill’ approach can help Delhi Daredevils win their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title. Meanwhile, Delhi is one of the few franchises which is yet to clinch the title.
Former Australia captain, Ricky Ponting has already made his goal clear in the four days of training.
Within this short time, young Indian cricketers seemed to be in awe of two-time World Cup-winning professional Ponting.
Meanwhile, Ponting earlier coached Mumbai Indians for two years and led them to one IPL title.
Iyer revealed for Ponting’s speech gave him goosebumps and fired the entire franchise.
“It has been really good with (Ponting so far). He has been pretty aggressive. He has got that positive frame of mind. When he came in and gave a speech to all of us, it really fired us, we almost had goose bumps,” Iyer said.
Iyer also added that Ponting was pretty clear in his goals. The right-handed batsman also mentioned Ponting urged us to focus on winning, not only on the process.
“He said that ‘we are here to win’. His frame of mind was pretty much about winning, not about the process. Normally, everybody comes in and talks a lot about process and but this guy had just one thing in his mind and that was to win,” Iyer stated.
The Mumbai batsman is also looking forward to learning a lot from Ponting. Talking about aggression, Iyer revealed that Ponting has given him freedom as well.
“He has got his own way of preparing every youngster and though it has been just three days, we all know that we will get to learn a lot from him. When I say aggression, he gives us freedom as well. He has asked us to play our own game,” Iyer reiterated.
On comparing two legends Rahul Dravid and Ponting, Shreyas added that both are different and have their own style to work on.
However, Shreyas Iyer believes they have a balanced team and has a good chance of winning the trophy this time.
