Rain is likely to play a spoilsport during Kings XI Punjab’s opener in the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Delhi Daredevils later today at Mohali.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorm, that is likely to strike the tri-city on Sunday evening. It coincides with Punjab’s home fixture which starts at 4 pm.

Thunderstorm around this time of the year is likely to be a strong gust of dust raising winds with light rainfall,” said Surender Paul, in-charge of the IMD’s local centre. “If it rains, some places may be drenched for an hour or two. So it is possible the match will get delayed,” he added.

Meanwhile, Paul believes there is no chance of rain cancelling the full match. According to their website, the brunt of the upcoming weather disturbances will take place only around Tuesday.

However, some part of the Mohali experienced isolated rains. Some southern parts also experienced hailstorm. Paul admitted this is because of the formation of clouds at higher altitude.

However, it might be changing soon as the maximum temperature is likely to go down by up to five degrees around Tuesday. The conditions are a result of both western disturbances and the easterlies.

Meanwhile, Punjab is raring to get on the field after roping a good squad at the auctions. They have a strong core group of Indian players backed by star overseas cricketers.

Moreover, Sehwag rated this as the best Punjab team in the last ten years.

On the other hand, Delhi will also look to get off to a winning note. They have brought in home lad Gautam Gambhir to change their fortune. However, they will miss the service of Kagiso Rabada, who will miss the entire league due to injury.
