IPL 2018: Rajiv Kumar to serve Chennai Super Kings as a fielding coach
Domestic cricketer, Rajiv Kumar on Friday (March 30), has been appointed as the fielding coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings.
Pertinently, Rajiv has played alongside Super Kings’ skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the first-class cricket. He is set to replace Steve Rixon.
Following the addition of the CSK’s support staff, the franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan has expressed an excitement while remarking Dhoni is happy to have Rajiv on board.
“Dhoni has a great rapport with him and knows him since his playing days. With Rixon not there, we felt the need for an extra hand during the pre-season training camp. and during the tournament. So we went with Rajiv,” Times of India quotes Viswanathan.
In the past, Rajiv also led his state-side in which Dhoni has also featured. Moreover, the 41-year-old Rajiv also served as the coach of Jharkhand.
In 2003 tie against Vidarbha, the 117-run stand is a memorable partnership between Dhoni and Vijay which has been recalled now and then.
It would be interesting to see how things will shape up in the CSK dugout after Rajiv shares camaraderie with Dhoni. Both went on to represent Bihar for a couple of years.
Rajiv had also enjoyed his experience when it came to the coaching in the United Kingdom.
Viswanathan believes the experienced campaigner like Rajiv has a lot on offer for the camp. He added his addition would play a significant role in gelling the unit well when it comes to the young talent.
“Rajiv brings to the table certain specific skills as fielding coach. He has good coaching experience, he bonds well with the players and he has sound knowledge about local talents,” Viswanathan concludes.
On Wednesday (March 28), Rajiv turned Kumar out for the Super Kings camp for the training session.
On the other side, Lakshmipathy Balaji will serve as the pace bowling coach.
Under the guidance of Stephen Fleming, CSK has now strengthened their coaching staff.
Moreover, the crowd-favorite team sweating it out at their home base MA Chidambaram Stadium. In this context, Rajiv Kumar has a lot to work on.
Super Kings team is scheduled to play their opener on April 7 at the Wankhede Stadium. The three-time IPL champions will play against the reigning champions Mumbai Indians.
