Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane deserved more chances in the white ball format. Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t received many opportunities in the 50-overs version in the recent past. In fact, Rahane Test form has also dipped in the recent past.

However, the stylish batsman had scored four fifties in the series against the Windies. But he didn’t get more chances even after proving his mettle. On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane will lead Rajasthan Royals in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League.

Rahane will like to revive his white ball career.

Rahane had led his team to the playoff stages in the previous season. The Royals will begin their IPL campaign against Kings XI Punjab at their home den of Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur.

Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his Times of India column, “The tournament’s first champions begin their campaign against the Punjabi boys and all eyes will be on who himself will be keen to make up for having missed last year’s tournament. After that glorious win back in 2008, the Rajasthan team has seldom looked dangerous.

“Yes, the T20 format means that they will upset the odd team but as a unit, they have not quite hit the high of 2008. This year though it could be different as along with Smith they have Jost Buttler who can take the game away in a matter of overs. Ajinkya Rahane who deserved better from the Indian selectors will also get an opportunity to show he can be fluent in this format too. The same applies to Ashwin as he tries to resurrect his limited-overs career”.

Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane will like to prove his mettle in the white ball format. The right-hander has thus far played 90 One Day Internationals in which he has scored 2962 runs at an average of 35.26. In fact, Rahane has also played 20 T20I in which he has amassed 375 runs.

The Mumbai batsman has played 126 IPL matches in which he has scored 3427 runs at an average of 32.95. Consequently, Rahane will like to impress with the bat in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. The stylish batsman will like to grab his opportunity and he will know that the IPL 2019 is a perfect chance for him to revive his white ball career.
