Chennai Super Kings have played some good brand of cricket in Vivo IPL 12 and have won 8 of their 12 matches so far. However, they have been pretty ordinary in the last 4 matches losing 3 of them. The back injury to skipper MS Dhoni hasn’t helped CSK and to add to the woes he has also been down with a fever which forced him to miss the last couple of matches.
Popular commentator and known as the ‘Voice of Indian cricket’ Harsha Bhogle in his column for the Times of India stated that Chennai Super Kings have been vulnerable in the last few matches. The absence of MS Dhoni has played a huge part as the skipper has looked in sensational form in the tournament so far.
“In the last couple of weeks, the mighty CSK have started looking a bit vulnerable and the usual minnows, Delhi, is playing with a swagger,” Harsha Bhogle wrote in his column for the Times of India.
Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals have already made it to the playoffs of the tournament. However, in the absence of MS Dhoni, CSK hasn’t looked anywhere close to their best. Hence the availability of MS Dhoni and his captaincy will be very important if CSK harbours hopes of defending their title.
“It happens every year in the IPL. The nonchalance, even carelessness of the early games gives way to scrappiness as the playoffs beckon. Forget the points, suddenly the humble second decimal in the net run rate is courted. And a quiet voice in the interiors of a dressing room will wonder aloud if a little more urgency, a spoonful of ruthlessness, earlier on mightn’t have come in handy,” Bhogle added.
If the Sunrisers are the frontrunners in the traffic jam that occupies the middle of the points table, it is because they demolished RCB in their third game by 118 runs. And then, in their ninth against KKR, they didn’t hang around while chasing 159 and got there in 15 overs. The pennies they saved than are their riches today,” Bhogle added.
There are quite a few teams in the tournament who will be fighting for the 3rd and the 4th spot in the points table. At this point in time, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad are better placed to make the playoffs as the 3rd and the 4th place side.
