IPL 2019: Chennai Super Kings In Search For Lungi Ndigi’s Replacement

Chennai Super Kings suffered a big setback even before the start of the competition with their pacer Lungi Ngidi ruled out of the entire season.  Ngidi suffered a side strain in South Africa’s ODI series against Sri Lanka. As a result, he is set to remain on the sidelines for at least four weeks before undergoing rehabilitation process ahead of the World Cup.

“Lungi felt discomfort while bowling during the last ODI against Sri Lanka at Newlands and immediately stopped bowling. Further scans revealed a Grade II muscle strain which will need up to four weeks of rest followed by a rehab programme leading up to the World Cup,” South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee said.

Missing Ngidi will be a huge blow for the Super Kings given the lack of depth in their pace bowling department. The defending champions have no other overseas frontline pacer in the squad.

Deepak Chahar, Mohit Sharma, Shardul Thakur are the only frontline pacers in the squad alongside allrounder Dwayne Bravo.

Ngidi had played an important role in Super Kings’ title-triumph last season. Playing his maiden season in IPL, the right-arm pacer had picked up 11 wickets with a remarkable economy-rate of just six. And with just a day left before the twelfth edition of the league gets underway, the Super Kings have started looking for a replacement for the pacer.

“Ngidi will be missed,” CSK’s CEO KS Viswanathan said on the team website. “We are in the process of identifying a replacement,” he added.

Super Kings will open their campaign against Royal Challengers on Saturday (March 23). The reigning champions will be favourite to win the game against the visitors at Chepauk as the latter are yet to win a single game in Chennai.

Meanwhile, Bravo has said experience mattered a lot in T20 cricket too and it showed in the triumph last year on a comeback from a two-year ban. The Super Kings have several players in their team who are over 30.

“We were aware of the name-calling but you can’t beat experience, no matter,” Bravo told Super Kings’ website.

“Last year everyone doubted us, and we went on to win,” he added.
