IPL 2019: Dinesh Karthik Should be in the World Cup Squad – Jacques Kallis
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Jacques Kallis has backed the inclusion of his skipper Dinesh Karthik in Indian National Cricket team’s squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup. Meanwhile, the selectors are due to announce the team on April 15 (Monday).
The main conundrum will be with the no four spot in the batting order. Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik have significant opportunities but has failed to offer consistency. The men in blues have also tried Vijay Shankar, and KL Rahul in that spot and one of these two are likely to bat in the important position going by the current form. But Jacques Kallis feels the experience and temperament of Dinesh Karthik will come in handy for Virat Kohli & Co in the quadrennial tournament in England and Wales.
Although the Kolkata skipper has lacked consistency, Karthik has more or less done well in limited opportunities. Dinesh Karthik has scored 425 runs in 20 matches at an average of 46.75 in ODIs since 2017. To add, his clinical finish against Bangladesh in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka last year proves his ability as a finisher. However, the selectors left him out of the recent ODI series against Australia – their last ODI series before the showpiece. But Jacques Kallis feels it will be silly from India’s side to not include him in the squad.
“India will be silly not to pick Dinesh Kartik in the World Cup team. He has the experience and the temperament and will be critical to India’s chances. He should be looked at as the number 4 option,” Kallis said.
It will be an open World Cup: Kallis
Many have tipped England and India as the favourites to lift the trophy in the upcoming event starting from May 30. However, the scenarios have changed in the last few months with Australia picking up at the right moment. They have defeated India 3-2 from being 2-0 down and backed it up with a whitewash against Pakistan. On the other hand, Windies also posed a good threat to England in the recent series while New Zealand and South Africa are always in the reckoning with firepower in their ranks.
Jacques Kallis feels it will be the most open tournament in history and also added that India have all the ingredients to lift the trophy.
“2019 will be the most open World Cup of all and India certainly has the team to win it and are the favourites going into the tournament,” Kallis concluded.
