IPL 2019: Franchises Likely to Have Multiple Home Grounds
Another exciting season of the Indian Premier League is on the cards, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces the challenge to ensure that the teams play seven matches at home considering the upcoming general election dates. Previously, IPL Governing Council released the itinerary for the first two weeks of the tournament. And now with the election dates announced, they are likely to come up with the full schedule later this week.
Meanwhile, with the country heading for seven-phase elections, states like West Bengal and Maharashtra have multiple voting dates. As a result, it will be difficult for the Board to keep all the home games at a single venue. A board official who knows the progress admitted that they are pondering over all the possible options. Also, he said that this would take some time to finalise the full schedule.
“We are working out on all the possible options. It will take a bit of time before we finalise the schedule,” a Board official said.
Given the scenario, the chances are high that teams will have four home games and the rest three will be ‘designated’ home games. BCCI has already kept Rajkot, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Lucknow and Dharamsala as back-up venues for IPL 12. There are also speculations going around that teams like Rajasthan Royals could play three matches at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. However, a franchise official who didn’t want to reveal his identity admitted it is a lengthy procedure. Speaking about the same, he explained that assurance from the police is key to the smooth running of the games.
“A lot depends on the state administration as well. If the local police assures us security then things could go smoothly. But still, a lot of discussions could be required,” one of the franchise officials said.
BCCI officials are likely to speak to local police of various states before taking the final call on the schedule. The upcoming edition of IPL will begin from March 23 at Chepauk with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore.
